Dimension in the Shadows

Dimension in the Shadows is a desk calendar made from black paperboard cut by laser. The set contains twelve monthly cards, each with a different design. Every card is mounted in a slit of a small wooden cube. Dates for Saturdays, Sundays and national holidays are cut through, while weekdays are half cut. Each abstract figure recalls a scene of the changing seasons in Japan. Seen against the light, the sharp outline reads as a paper sculpture. The cast shadow changes shape as the light moves, adding quiet interest to daily life.

Traces Of Zero

One card can be used as two-month calendar on both sides. Zero shaped frame is embossed with dates, and the thin paper inside the frame is Pachika paper which becomes translucent by hot stamping. Taking advantage of its characteristics, the minute and delicate realism of nature and the living world that are often overlooked was extracted. Typeface is a calendar designed around the concept of the typeface. The set contains four sheets. The months from January to December are punched out in an original typeface. Each sheet can be assembled into a three-dimensional unit that displays three months of the year. Assembly is simple and needs no glue or scissors. The sheets are made of pure white cardboard, and the number of fastening points is kept to a minimum. Each sheet measures 140 by 185 millimeters. The calendar can also be displayed as part of a room interior.

Fck 2020 is a table calendar for the year 2021. The calendar is produced as a leporello, a long sheet folded into twelve panels. It can be kept flat and browsed like a book, or placed on a desk in the shape of a circle or other forms. Each month carries a short wish for the new year, told through polychrome modernist graphics and minimal illustrations. The intent is to turn the page on a difficult year with humour and imagination. Printing is digital on 240 gram white paper. The folded size is 169 by 240 millimetres.

Japanese Kumano Kodo

Japanese Kumano Kodo is a hand-drawn illustration created for a corporate wall calendar. The calendar theme is the old highways of Japan, including the Oshu Highway, the Tokaido, the Sanyo Highway, the Kumano Kodo, the Nagasaki Highway and the Minoji. The Kumano Kodo is a pilgrimage route used since about the year 908 and still walked today. The illustration brings the Nachi Fire Festival and Nachi Falls together in one colorful scene. The artwork is painted with acrylic paint on illustration board. The calendar has six sheets and measures 420 by 595 millimeters.

Each of the twelve cards carries a letter from an endangered species, inviting reflection, personal pledges and the marking of important dates. Every card folds into a self standing structure without binding, and can later be placed in its paper envelope for mailing or archiving. The set is offset printed on FSC certified uncoated paper and housed in a drawer style paper box that can be reused as a keepsake or teaching object.

Draw One

Draw One is a calendar shaped like a tissue box. Each sheet is printed with a single date, and users pull out one sheet each day to update the calendar. A drawn sheet cannot be used again, which reflects the one-way nature of time. An opening on the front shows the remaining sheets and the rest of the year. The box is made of wooden boards cut to standard sizes, marked by laser engraving, joined with environmentally friendly glue and waxed to keep the natural texture of the wood. The intent is to encourage users to value time.

Kayan 2022 is a folding calendar created for an architecture office. The calendar is printed on uncoated wood-free paper and folds into a small square that is easy to carry and to store. When opened, the sheet becomes a large square poster for a wall or a board. Each month is shown with a geometric form, and the dates flow around the shapes. Weekends are printed in a different color for quick reading. Open white space allows notes. After the year ends, the poster can be turned over to show a collage of architecture details.

In Bag On Desk is a promotional calendar created for goo, an Internet portal site that originated in Japan. The design is an updated version of a desk calendar with pockets. In Bag On Desk can be used in two ways, as a notebook carried in a bag and as a desk calendar. A monthly calendar, memo paper and a pocket for receipts and similar papers are included. The calendar stands on a desk when the cover paper is fastened with a magnet. The size is 195 by 145 by 10 millimeters. Detailed printing and processing technologies were used.
